TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The New Taipei City Government (新北市政府) unveiled six potential sites on Wednesday (Feb. 19) for constructing a domed stadium to integrate smart services, sports, cultural performances, and tourism entertainment. Mayor Hou You-yi (侯友宜) emphasized the necessity of building the dome and plans to narrow down the options to two priority locations within six months, finalizing the site selection by the end of the year.
During a municipal administration meeting, Deputy Mayor Liu Ho-jan (劉和然) presented a report on the "large multifunctional venue" project. Liu analyzed information from eight domes built in Asia, including those in Japan and South Korea, to identify factors relevant to New Taipei's site selection.
Liu noted the lack of indoor performance spaces in northern Taiwan with seating for over 10,000 people, currently only available at the Taipei Dome (台北大巨蛋) for baseball events. He highlighted New Taipei's strategic location at the core of the Greater Taipei living circle, abundant tourism resources, and the completion of the Three Rings and Six Lines transportation network as advantages for hosting the dome.
The initial shortlist of six locations was revealed during the the administration meeting, including "Banshu Gymnasium"(板樹體育館), "Shulin Daganyuan"(樹林大柑園), and "Tucheng Detention Center" (土城看守所). Mayor Hou stressed the importance of gathering opinions from experts, scholars, and residents to accelerate consensus-building.
