NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) emphasized the importance of budget oversight during his inspection of municipal construction on Monday (Jan. 20). He stated that councilors and legislators must ensure every penny is well-spent, highlighting the role of budget scrutiny in creating public welfare.
The Executive Yuan (行政院) held a press conference a day earlier, during which Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) warned that significant budget cuts could hinder the Republic of China's (ROC, 中華民國) operations, affecting civil servants' ability to work and execute policies. While inspecting construction progress in Linkou District (林口), Hou reiterated the need for rigorous budget reviews, asserting that public representatives must enhance citizens' welfare.
Hou praised the six New Taipei City Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) legislators for their outstanding performance in advocating for local budgets. He stated that these legislators have tirelessly worked for the people, and their efforts deserve respect and admiration. Hou dismissed calls for their recall. He also noted the Act Governing the Allocation of Government Revenues and Expenditures (財劃法) has not been amended for over 20 years, stressing the necessity of returning budgets to local areas to accelerate development.
Hou expressed a strong desire to see the spirit of local autonomy realized, reflecting the community's expectations. The ongoing debate on budget allocation and legislative responsibilities continues to be a focal point for both local and national leaders.
