TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As Taiwan gears up for the Lunar New Year holiday, which begins on Saturday (Jan. 25), meteorologists predict a significant drop in temperature across the island due to a strengthening northeast monsoon.
On Friday, Wu Der-rong (吳德榮), a weather expert, stated that the north and northeast regions experienced cooler temperatures ranging from 12 to 22 degrees Celsius, while central and southern areas saw a mild day with temperatures between 12 and 27 degrees Celsius.
Starting Saturday, the northeast wind will intensify, bringing sporadic showers to the north and east, with the central and southern regions remaining mostly cloudy to clear.
Lin Te-en (林得恩), another meteorologist, highlighted that by Sunday evening, the arrival of strong cold air will push temperatures down across Taiwan, with the coldest period expected from Monday morning through Wednesday morning.
Wu warned that from Lunar New Year's Eve (Jan. 28) to Jan. 30, nighttime temperatures could drop below 5 degrees Celsius in low-lying areas. By Thursday, the cold wave will begin to weaken, but the west should brace for significant temperature differences between day and night.
