TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Michelle Lee (李慧芝), spokesperson for the Executive Yuan, clarified on Thursday (Dec. 12) that the term "intensify" regarding China's recent military movements, involves a comprehensive assessment rather than a single indicator. The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) earlier agreed to proceed with the Taipei-Shanghai Twin-City Forum (台北-上海雙城論壇) under specific conditions, with a key stipulation that the Chinese Communist Party's (CPP, 中共) pressure on Taiwan must not intensify.
Chen Shu-mei (陳淑媚), an official from MAC, emphasized the need for a thorough evaluation of various situations to ensure appropriate follow-up actions. Hua Yuan (華源), Shanghai's vice mayor, and a delegation of 102 people are expected to arrive in Taipei on Dec. 16. However, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) mentioned he has not yet received any official documents from the council requesting additional paperwork for the delegation.
Chen confirmed that the council had sent an agreement letter to the Taipei City Government on Dec. 11, which included details about the required supplementary materials to be processed according to government policies and relevant laws. She noted recent military deployments by the Chinese Communist Party around the Taiwan Strait, with government departments closely monitoring the situation.
The Taipei City Government has expressed its belief that the forum is essential for fostering a peaceful cross-strait atmosphere. Chen added that the council maintains open communication with the Taipei City Government, which understands and respects the need to postpone the forum if cross-strait tensions worsen.
