TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) confirmed plans on Tuesday (Dec. 10) for a new super dome in Taichung, citing international standards and specific site requirements. The project, inspired by the Taipei Dome's (大巨蛋) successful completion in late 2023, aims to occupy 10 to 15 hectares, considering factors like transportation and financial feasibility.
Mayor Lu hopes the "Taichung Dome" (台中大巨蛋) will accommodate 30,000 to 40,000 people and estimates the cost at NT$40 billion to NT$50 billion. She stated that the final evaluations are underway and promised to update the public once decisions are finalized.
Tsai Chi-chang (蔡其昌), president of the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL, 中職聯盟), expressed support for the project, emphasizing the strategic location in central and southern Taiwan. He noted that placing the dome too close to Taipei might dilute its benefits, thus making central or southern Taiwan an ideal location for the second dome.
The announcement has generated significant interest, especially given the recent success of Taipei's dome, which hosted numerous events. With the Taichung dome "already in planning," Mayor Lu revealed that officials will announce the potential location within two years.
