TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) announced Monday (Nov. 25) that the city will increase bonuses for the WBSC Premier12 but requires players to have been registered residents for over a year to qualify. This decision follows Taiwan's 4-0 victory over Japan on Nov. 24, which secured the championship and thrilled the nation.
Chiang clarified that Taipei's Department of Sports (體育局) mandates a one-year residency for players to receive a 10% bonus of NT$700,000 and a training subsidy of NT$249,600. He plans to discuss the criteria further with the department. When pressed by the media about announcing bonuses without confirming residency, Chiang stated that the Taipei City Government would, if possible, provide the maximum support to the athletes.
He also noted that many players graduated from Taipei's schools and will be recognized as outstanding alumni. Also, Chiang mentioned an upcoming event on Tuesday featuring the WeiChuan Dragons (味全龍) players, addressing fans' anticipation. He expressed confidence in the Taipei Dome (台北大巨蛋), noting its history of hosting numerous Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL, 中華職業棒球大聯盟) games, which has helped players adapt to indoor venues.
