TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The 2024 Open Doors Report, released Tuesday (Nov. 19), highlights a 6.1% increase in Taiwanese students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities, reaching 23,157 from 21,834 during the 2023-2024 academic year. This surge positions Taiwan as the fifth largest source of international students in the U.S., contributing 2.1% to the international student population.
The report, compiled annually by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and Institute of International Education, underscores the U.S. as the top destination for international students, welcoming 1,126,690 students, a 6.6% increase from the previous year. Among Taiwanese students, 43.1% are enrolled in graduate studies, making Taiwan the eighth largest origin for graduate students.
Taiwanese students show diverse academic pursuits in the U.S., with 24% in undergraduate programs and over 28% in Optional Practical Training (OPT) programs. The OPT participation marks a 27.4% increase, ranking Taiwan fourth in this category. Additionally, non-degree programs see a 22.8% rise, with Taiwanese students accounting for 4.5% of this group.
The report's release aligns with International Education Week (IEW), a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, running from Nov. 18-22. The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) has organized various activities, including in-person and virtual sessions, to guide Taiwanese students on opportunities in the U.S.
As Taiwan solidifies its role as a key contributor to the international academic landscape, these findings may encourage further educational exchanges and collaborations between Taiwan and the U.S.
