YUNLIN (TVBS News) — Yunlin County inaugurated its first legal pet burial area on Monday (Nov. 18), offering a dedicated space for pet owners to lay their beloved animals to rest. Douliu City Office (斗六市公所) invested NT$1.2 million to establish this facility, which accommodates 200 plots for eco-friendly tree burials. This addresses the rising demand for pet burial services.
Douliu Mayor Lin Sheng-chueh (林聖爵) emphasized the burial area's integration of environmental principles, allowing pet ashes to return to nature. The site features pathways, seating areas, and sculptures of pets, enhancing the memorial experience. The facility designates 70 plots for dogs, 65 for cats, and 65 for other pets, costing NT$2,000.
The Douliu City Office noted that the pet burial area does not provide cremation services and focuses solely on tree burials. Pet owners can apply for these services at the park's service center. A local dog lover surnamed Chen praised the facility, stating it offers a fixed place for remembrance, allowing owners to visit when they miss their pets.
Liao Pei-chih (廖培志), head of the Animal and Plant Disease Control Center (動植物防疫所), pointed out that current regulations classify deceased animals as waste. However, due to humanitarian considerations, the county government has budgeted for collective cremation by the sanitation team. Liao also warned that the traditional disposal of pet remains could violate waste disposal laws, urging owners to adhere to proper protocols.
