TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A recent poll released on Friday (Oct. 18) showed that over 70% of Taiwanese citizens support President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) assertion that "the People's Republic of China has no right to represent Taiwan."

President Lai emphasized this position during his speech on the Double Tenth National Day, sparking widespread agreement across political lines. The Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation (TPOF, 台灣民意基金會) revealed that only 20% of respondents disagreed with this stance.

The poll reveals that not only do Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) supporters back Lai's statement, but a significant majority of Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) supporters also concur.

TPOF chairman Michael You (游盈隆) noted this has resonated strongly with Taiwanese society since Lai took office on May 20, 2024. Yu stated that this finding sends a clear and important message, highlighting that Lai's assertion reflects a broad consensus within Taiwanese society.

The survey, designed and analyzed by You, was conducted from Oct. 13 to 15, targeting adults aged 20 and over across Taiwan. The effective sample size included 1,077 respondents, with 757 reached via landline and 320 via mobile phone.
