KEELUNG (TVBS News) — The Central Election Commission (CEC, 中央選舉委員會) announced on Friday (Oct. 18) that voters rejected the recall of Keelung Mayor George Hsieh (謝國樑), and explained that this decision prevents any further recall attempts during his current term.
The CEC clarified this outcome under the "Public Officials Election and Recall Act" (公職人員選舉罷免法) Article 92.
The commission reported a total of 310,797 eligible voters participated, with a turnout of 156,776, marking a 50.44% voter turnout. Of the 155,948 valid ballots, 69,934 supported the recall, while 86,014 opposed it. The commission also noted 828 invalid votes.
Under the act, the commission confirmed that a defeated recall proposal prohibits further recall attempts against the same official within their term. This ruling solidifies Mayor Hsieh's position and ensures his continuation in office without the threat of another recall vote.
