TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) decried China's "Joint Sword-2024B" (聯合利劍-2024B) military exercises on Monday (Oct. 14), claiming they underscore Chinese President Xi Jinping's determination to annex Taiwan. Delivering a compelling speech at the Forum 2000 in the Czech Republic, Tsai urged democratic nations worldwide to unite against the growing threat of authoritarian regimes.

Tsai chose Forum 2000 for her first public participation since leaving office, seeking a platform to discuss democracy with like-minded individuals. She reminisced about her 2004 participation in the forum and her inspiring dialogue with former Czech President Václav Havel. She described Forum 2000 as an inclusive platform for global leaders to address pressing issues.

Addressing global democratic challenges, Tsai noted authoritarian regimes' increasing confidence in undermining citizens' faith in democratic systems. She emphasized Taiwan's frontline position in facing China's persistent threats and military pressure. Tsai also highlighted Taiwan's international role, particularly its support for Ukraine, and stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation with European Union countries.

Tsai called on democratic nations to unite against economic coercion and information manipulation by authoritarian powers, sending a clear signal of resistance. She drew parallels between Taiwan's and Europe's democratic histories, both rooted in resistance against dictatorship. She urged global democracies to face future challenges through collective efforts and a steadfast belief in democratic values.

Concluding her speech, Tsai invited attendees to visit Taiwan, experience its cuisine, and meet its warm-hearted people.
