TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Election Commission (中央選舉委員會) has imposed a strict ban on recall campaign activities for Keelung City (基隆市) Mayor George Hsieh (謝國樑) on the day of the recall vote scheduled for Oct. 13. Authorities aim to ensure a fair and orderly voting process by enforcing these regulations.
The commission warned that violations of the no-campaigning rule on voting day could result in fines up to NT$2 million. They have prohibited any behavior that could obstruct voting or influence voters within 30 meters of the polling stations.
The "Public Officials Election And Recall Act" (公職人員選舉罷免法) mandates that political parties and individuals refrain from recall activities on the voting day, with penalties ranging from NT$200,000 to NT$2 million for violators.
Additional infractions could incur fines between NT$100,000 and NT$1 million. The commission has reminded media outlets to avoid publishing any recall-related advertisements on voting day. The ban on campaigning begins at midnight and remains in effect throughout the voting period, emphasizing that the recall's outcome hinges on the number of affirmative votes and voter turnout.
The commission also highlighted that voters are prohibited from bringing devices with photography capabilities into polling stations.
Violators face fines from NT$30,000 to NT$300,000. This measure aims to protect voter privacy and maintain the integrity of the electoral process. As the recall vote approaches, authorities urge all parties to adhere strictly to these regulations to ensure a smooth electoral process.
