TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) acknowledged on Tuesday (Oct. 8) the government's inadequate performance in combating fraud and emphasized the need for greater efforts. The statement came during a legislative session where Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) Legislator Wang Mei-hui (王美惠) criticized the rise in fraud cases despite the enactment of four new anti-fraud legislation.
According to the National Police Agency's anti-fraud dashboard, fraud losses in Taiwan have reached NT$5 billion. Wang highlighted that the amount exceeded NT$2 billion on Oct. 6 and rose to over NT$5 billion by Oct. 7.
However, Minister of the Interior Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳) reported a 15% decrease in fraud cases and losses in September compared to August, following the implementation of the anti-fraud legislation in late July. Liu clarified that the figures on the dashboard represent reported amounts and may differ from amounts involved in criminal cases.
Wang stressed the public's concern about the recovery of defrauded funds, noting that the amount retrieved remains limited. To this, Premier Cho assured that the government will enhance its anti-fraud efforts through technology and international cooperation.
As the government pledges to strengthen its strategies, the public remains watchful of its ability to recover stolen funds and reduce fraud incidents. The effectiveness of these measures will likely shape public trust and confidence in the government's commitment to tackling fraud.
