TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) reported on Friday (Oct. 4) that Typhoon Krathon weakened to a tropical depression at 5 a.m.
Still, the administration issued heavy rain alerts for eight areas, warning of localized heavy or torrential rain on the north coast of Keelung, mountainous areas of Taipei City, and Taitung County.
Residents in Yilan, Hualien, Shuangxi District (雙溪地區) of New Taipei, and the mountainous areas of Kaohsiung and Pingtung should prepare for possible heavy rain, lightning, and strong gusts.
The administration advised caution, noting the northern seas and the Taiwan Strait remain turbulent, with wave heights reaching 3 to 5 meters. Authorities urged the public to avoid coastal activities due to the dangerous conditions.
CWA also issued a strong wind advisory for land areas, highlighting Matsu and Penghu as particularly vulnerable to gusts of 9 to 10. The coastal area from Taichung to Tainan and New Taipei to Miaoli may also experience strong winds.
