TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) directed city departments on Thursday (Oct. 3) to expedite urban restoration if the city resumes regular work and school activities on Friday.
The mayor attended a meeting at Taipei's Department of Disaster Response Center (台北市災害應變中心) to assess the impact of recent weather disruptions.
The report highlighted that while rainfall was minimal, Mt. Datun (大屯山) experienced winds reaching level 11, and Chinese Culture University (文化大學) faced level 10 gusts. In contrast, areas like Tianmu (天母), Guandu (關渡), and Xinyi District recorded winds between levels 8 and 10.
By Thursday morning, the center received 178 reports of incidents, primarily related to strong winds. These included 79 cases of fallen trees and 41 instances of building damage. Additionally, 24 reports involved precarious or fallen billboards, predominantly in Shilin (士林) and Beitou (北投).
The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) predicts the typhoon will weaken into a tropical depression before its storm radius reaches Taipei, sparing the city from entering the level 7 storm zone or land warning range.
Mayor Chiang emphasized that public safety remains the top priority when considering a potential third day of work and school suspension.
Preparations for the National Day gala on Oct. 5, with the outdoor broadcast site set up, continue as planned. However, authorities will monitor the typhoon closely and make necessary adjustments if necessary.
