TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Krathon has wreaked havoc across Taiwan, claiming two lives, leaving two individuals missing, and injuring 123 others, according to the Central Emergency Operation Center (中央災害應變中心) as of Thursday (Oct. 3) morning.
A 70-year-old man in Hualien County died on Oct. 1 after falling while trimming trees. Another fatality occurred when a 66-year-old man in Taitung County succumbed to injuries on Oct. 2 after his vehicle struck falling rocks on Sept. 30.
Authorities are still searching for a suspected migrant worker swept out to sea on Oct. 1 at Yunlin County, and efforts continue to locate a person washed away in Hualien County on Oct. 2.
The typhoon triggered 7 landslides, 4 in Keelung City, 2 in Pingtung County, and 1 in Taitung County, though no injuries or entrapments were reported.
As of 8:30 a.m., officials recorded 1,036 general disaster incidents, resolving 875 and 161 still underway, primarily involving downed trees, infrastructure, and building damage in Kaohsiung City.
Preventive evacuations affected 9,967 people across 13 counties and cities. 120 shelters were established, primarily in Taitung, Hualien, Pingtung, and Kaohsiung, housing 1,978 individuals.
