TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Over half of Taiwanese encounter scams weekly, with nearly 30% falling victim within an hour, according to "The State of Scams in Taiwan 2024" report released on Monday (Sept. 30).
The Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA, 全球防詐聯盟) conducted the survey across 13 Asian regions, involving nearly 25,000 respondents. The findings list the top ten scam methods in Asia, identifying personal data theft, investment scams, and shopping scams as common concerns.
In Taiwan, personal data theft poses the most significant threat, affecting 24% of the population. This trend mirrors the situation in Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, mainland China, and three other countries, indicating a growing issue with data security.
Following personal data theft, shopping scams (15%) and corporate impersonation scams (13%) continue to endanger consumer financial safety. Fake friend or family member scams and lottery or promotion scams each account for 11%, reflecting the diverse and adaptive nature of scam tactics.
Other prevalent scam methods include investment scams, fake billing scams, and charity donation scams, underscoring the critical need for scam prevention in modern society.
The report was created by GASA in collaboration with Whoscall and ScamAdviser, aiming to provide insights on the impact of scams in Asian countries.
