TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) reaffirmed Taiwan's strong ties with Paraguay on Thursday (Sept. 19), expressing hope for closer future exchanges.
Han made this statement during a visit by Paraguayan Ambassador to Taiwan Carlos José Fleitas Rodríguez to the Legislative Yuan, where several Taiwanese legislators also attended.
Han highlighted the long-standing friendship between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Paraguay, established in 1957, the year he was born. He noted the enduring and solid nature of this bilateral relationship.
Han also praised Paraguayan beef and pork, which are fed on natural grass, and expressed willingness to support promotional activities for these products in Taiwan.
More importantly, Han emphasized the educational exchanges between Taiwan and Paraguay, noting that many Paraguayan students excel in high-tech education in Taiwan. He expressed hope for even closer future collaboration in this area.
Fleitas, representing Paraguayan President Santiago Peña Palacios, conveyed his country's sincere greetings and reaffirmed the unwavering cooperative friendship between Paraguay and Taiwan.
Fleitas stressed the shared values of justice, freedom, and the rule of law between Paraguay and Taiwan, stating that defending Taiwan's democracy equates to defending world democracy.
Fleitas is a distinguished career diplomat who has served in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and Cuba and was Paraguay's envoy to Taiwan from 2010 to 2013. He also has deep ties to Taiwan, having studied for a master's degree at Tamkang University (淡江大學) on a Taiwan scholarship.
