TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese men's doubles pair Wang Chi-Lin (王齊麟) and Chiu Hsiang Chieh (邱相榤) faced a challenging start at the Victor China Open 2024, losing their first-round match on Tuesday (Sept. 17).
Wang and Chiu struggled from the outset against the Indonesian duo Daniel Marthin and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, trailing 0-5 early in the first game. Despite narrowing the gap to two points, they failed to maintain control and lost games 13-21. They initially led 2-0 in the second game but couldn't sustain their momentum, ultimately losing 13-21.
After Wang Chi-Lin and Lee Yang (李洋) secured consecutive titles in men's doubles at the 2024 Olympics, Lee decided to retire, leading to the duo's split. Wang then partnered with junior player Chiu Hsiang Chieh. The new pair recently reached the Korea Open and the LI-NING Hong Kong Open semifinals.
Meanwhile, Lee Chia-hao (李佳豪) achieved a thrilling victory in his first-round singles match against China's Lu Guangzu (陸光祖). Lee won 24-22, 11-21, 21-18, breaking his previous 0-5 record against Lu. He now advances to the round of 16, where he will compete against Japan's Kodai Naraoka (奈良岡功大) for a spot in the quarterfinals.
