TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Transportation Minister Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) announced plans on Monday (Sept. 2) to install platform doors at major Taiwan Railway (台鐵) stations to address recent incidents of passengers falling onto tracks during peak hours.
Chen made this statement after inspecting the Taiwan Railway Taichung Station.
The Taiwan High Speed Rail (高鐵, THSRC) reported two incidents this year where passengers fainted and fell onto the tracks at Banqiao Station and Hsinchu Station. Fortunately, rescuers saved both individuals, who sustained only minor injuries.
THSRC has planned to install platform doors at all stations along its line, with a budget of approximately NT$2.52 billion. The company will prioritize the installation at Banqiao Station and Hsinchu Station to complete platform doors at all 11 stations by 2028.
Currently, Taipei Station has already installed platform doors. THSRC stated that this initiative aims to enhance passenger safety and improve train operation efficiency. The company has launched a full-line platform door installation project.
THSRC posted a tender notice on its official website late last month. The bid is scheduled to be awarded on Sept. 27. The selection will follow the most advantageous bid principle.
