TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation (TPOF, 台灣民意基金會) revealed on Monday (Aug. 26) a historic dip in Taiwan's sentiment towards the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The latest poll shows an all-time low "emotional temperature" of 17.31 degrees, reflecting a significant rise in animosity since October 2022.
If one percentage point equals 195,000 adults, over 17 million Taiwanese either dislike or are indifferent to the CCP, with approximately 13.86 million expressing outright aversion, the foundation commented.
Emphasizing the stark contrast, TPOF Chairman Michael You (游盈隆) stated that the "Three Key Developments in Cross-Strait Relations" (關於兩岸關係最新的三個關鍵性發展) poll also found that 71.1% of respondents had a negative view of the CCP, while a mere 4.1% expressed positive feelings, and 8.6% were unsure or refused to answer.
You further noted that Taiwan's sentiment towards the CCP has never been favorable, with the highest recorded temperature being 32.21 degrees in June 2021.
You attributed the most significant change to the CCP's military exercises around Taiwan to October 2022, which resulted in a temperature of 20.25 degrees. The current temperature of 17.31 degrees marks the lowest point ever recorded with China's increasing military drills toward the island.
Conducted from Aug. 12 to 14, the poll used the feeling thermometer methodology to survey 1,075 adults aged 20 and above via landline and mobile phones, rating with an imaginary scale ranging from 0 (very cold) to 100 (very warm).
