TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Shanshan continues to approach Japan, with projections indicating it will reach super typhoon status on Tuesday (Aug. 27). JR Central and JR West have issued statements about potential preventive suspensions of train services.
The storm is expected to hit western to eastern Japan, bringing severe weather conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Sanyo Shinkansen may halt operations from Aug. 27 to 28, while the East Japan Shinkansen could see disruptions from Aug. 27 to 29.
JR East has also warned of significant delays or suspensions on the Joetsu, Hokuriku, Tohoku, Yamagata, and Akita Shinkansen lines. The railway company urged travelers to prepare for potential disruptions and plan accordingly.
Kosuke Ito (伊藤耕介), associate professor at Kyoto University's Disaster Prevention Research Institute, explained that high sea temperatures along the typhoon's path and deeper ocean waters, combined with favorable wind conditions, provide an environment for San San to intensify. He noted that Typhoon Shanshan has a conducive environment to continue strengthening.
