TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda is set to arrive in Taiwan on Tuesday (Aug. 20) for a three-day visit. Noda, a member of Japan's largest opposition party, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP), aims to discuss Taiwan Strait issues and economic security with key Taiwanese officials.
Noda departed from Haneda Airport Tuesday morning and plans to meet with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and other officials. Fuji News Network (FNN) reported that Noda's delegation includes fellow CDP parliament members. In addition to high-level talks, Noda will speak at a forum addressing regional security and economic concerns.
The CDP will announce its leadership election on Sept. 7, with voting set for Sept. 23. NHK reported that CDP members from Chiba have urged Noda to run for party leader.
Observers will closely follow Noda's engagements and speeches during his Taiwan visit, with particular attention to his discussions on Taiwan Strait tensions and economic security.
