TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) on Wednesday (Aug. 14) accused the government of misleading the public about power stability and criticized it for distributing electricity based on political ideology. The KMT demanded that President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) deliver a State of the Nation address at the Legislative Yuan (立法院) to clarify the situation.

The KMT held a press conference to address concerns over power stability. This follows a recent announcement by Taiwan Power Company (Taipower, 台電公司), which stated that it would not approve power supply applications for data centers requesting more than 5MW of electricity if they are located north of Taoyuan, suggesting instead that they be situated south of Taoyuan.

Lee Yen-hsiu (李彥秀), head of the KMT Culture and Communications Committee, argued that Taipower's plan indicates a power shortage in northern Taiwan. Lee pointed out that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) previously claimed there would be no power issues before 2030, but Taipower’s recent actions contradict this statement. She emphasized that power supply policies are critical for national development and urged the Lai administration to address the issue honestly.

Chiang I-chen (江怡臻), a New Taipei City councilor, noted that New Taipei has excellent conditions and convenient transportation. However, it is not being chosen for data center establishment due to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (經濟部) and Taipower's electricity provisions.

The KMT’s call for transparency and accountability in Taiwan's power supply policies highlights the ongoing debate over the nation’s energy stability.
