TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) declared on Monday (June 24) that he would petition the Constitutional Court for a constitutional interpretation of recently passed legislative reform bills. He made this announcement during his inaugural "open-hall" discussion since taking office.

At the event, lawyer Hung Wei-sheng (洪偉勝) highlighted that President Lai views the Legislative Yuan's handling of the reform amendments as unconstitutional. Following the president's declaration, Lai plans to initiate a constitutional lawsuit, seeking a review of several provisions, including the regularisation of the president's State of the Nation address.

In his address, President Lai articulated his opposition to expanding legislative powers, clarifying that his concern is not with the legislature's reform per se but with the potential overreach in power. He emphasized the historic importance of this moment to uphold the constitution, portraying his role as a guardian of the democratic constitutional system.

Lai is set to officially announce his actions today, requesting a constitutional interpretation and a stay of execution from the Constitutional Court to ensure the reform's constitutionality and legitimacy are judicially assessed.
