TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The head of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) on Friday (June 21) called on the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to align with public sentiment and uphold the principles of democratic reform following the Legislative Yuan's (立法院) rejection of legislative reform bills proposed by the Executive Yuan (行政院).
KMT Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) highlighted the backing from KMT and Taiwan People's Party legislators, emphasizing public anticipation for these reforms.
Chu appealed to the DPP to reconnect with its foundational goals of democratic reform, invoking the legacy of former Presidents Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), and Representative to Japan Frank Hsieh (謝長廷), who have advocated for these reforms over the past 30 years. He warned that if the DPP continues to resist reform and ignore public sentiment, the KMT will intensify its efforts to mobilize national support for legislative changes.
During the "Blue Eagle Movement" rally, Chu underscored that the recent voting outcomes in the Legislative Yuan reflected a commitment to justice and anti-corruption. He urged President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and the DPP to remember that Taiwan's democracy relies on voting, not on confrontation and violence.
