TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Eric Chu (朱立倫), the chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT), criticized President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Wednesday (May 29) for not acting as a national leader since taking office.

During the KMT's Central Standing Committee meeting, Chu accused President Lai of prioritizing party interests over national interests, leading to heightened cross-strait tensions and threats to national security.

The KMT chairman emphasized the need for President Lai to embrace his role as president and address the expectations of the people with an open heart to promote peace and security across the Taiwan Strait. He argued that the president's current approach has jeopardized the nation's safety and stability.

Furthermore, Chu highlighted the KMT's commitment to exposing malpractices, including issues related to the procurement of eggs, COVID-19 rapid tests, vaccines, and Tainan's solar plant scandals and addressing livelihood issues.

He also pointed out the success of the third wave of democratic reforms, initiated by the KMT and other opposition forces, which has made the parliament a true legislative body and strengthened democratic checks and balances.

Chu praised the smooth passage of measures such as parliamentary inquiry rights, hearing rights, and penalties for contempt of parliament, showcasing the practice of a transparent parliament.

He further criticized the ruling authorities for their changing attitudes towards democratic reforms and their use of violence against public opinion. However, he stressed that street protests do not represent the entirety of public opinion, which truly lies in the hands of the voters.

The KMT chairman's remarks underscore the ongoing political tensions in Taiwan and the opposition's efforts to challenge the current administration's policies and approach to governance.

As Taiwan navigates these complex issues, the role of the opposition and the pursuit of democratic reforms remain crucial in shaping the island's political landscape.
