TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) announced on Wednesday (June 19) the formation of three specialized committees aimed at addressing national challenges, coinciding with his first month in office. The announcement occurred during a press conference at the Presidential Office (總統府), themed "Trust in New Politics, A New Era for Taiwan" (信賴新政.時代新台灣).
The committees established are the National Climate Change Strategy Committee (國家氣候變遷對策委員會), the Society Defense Resilience Committee (全社會防衛韌性委員會), and the Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee (健康台灣推動委員會). These groups will meet quarterly to strategize on national development and facilitate cross-sector dialogue including industry, government, academia, and civil society, thereby fostering international cooperation.
President Lai, accompanied by Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), Secretary-General to the President Pan Men-an (潘孟安), and National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), detailed the roles of the newly formed committees. Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun (鄭麗君), President of Academia Sinica James C. Liao (廖俊智), and Pegatron's Chairman Tung Tzu-hsien (童子賢) serve as vice conveners of the climate committee.
Leadership of the Society Defense Resilience Committee includes Vice President Hsiao, Secretary-General Pan, and Secretary-General Wu. The Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee is chaired by Chen Chih-hung (陳志鴻), Weng Chi-hui (翁啟惠), and Minister without Portfolio Chen Shih-chung (陳時中).
These initiatives, developed in close collaboration between President Lai and Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰), embody the administration's commitment to unity and cross-sectoral cooperation. They aim to bolster governmental and public collaboration, enhance communication platforms, and advance various reforms.
President Lai stressed that his administration’s focus on national development, civil dialogue, and international cooperation aligns with his "Trust in New Politics" initiative and underscores his commitment to positioning Taiwan as a pivotal force in global prosperity.
