TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In a statement released on Thursday (May 23), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson Wu Cheng criticized China's decision to launch military exercises around Taiwan, labeling it a clear demonstration of its authoritarian nature and disruptive actions.
The exercises, named "Joint Sword-2024A," have sparked significant international concern, highlighting the escalating tensions in the region.
China's Military Maneuvers
China announced the commencement of the "Joint Sword-2024A" military exercises on May 23, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from the DPP. Wu condemned the exercises for not only threatening Taiwan's democratic system but also attempting to alter the status quo across the Taiwan Strait, undermining regional peace and stability.
The DPP called on China to halt its irrational actions towards Taiwan immediately and to engage in constructive dialogue with Taiwan's democratically elected government, emphasizing the importance of maintaining regional peace and stability.
A Call for Peaceful Dialogue
Wu reiterated the DPP's willingness to engage in positive interactions with China based on principles of equality and dignity. He urged China to acknowledge the reality of the Republic of China (ROC) and respect the choices of the Taiwanese people. China should demonstrate confidence and sincerity, taking on a shared responsibility for preserving peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the broader region.
Wu's strong words underscored a firm stance against China's aggressive tactics, framing them as a threat to regional peace and a challenge to democratic values.
The statement highlighted that China's actions would not intimidate the people of Taiwan nor gain acceptance from the international community. Instead, Wu warned that such behavior would only cement China's reputation as a "troublemaker" for regional peace.
