TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Culture's "Culture Points", designed for experiences and consumption in cultural and artistic domains began distribution on Saturday (Jan. 20).
The scheme entitles Taiwanese youth aged 16 to 22 to receive at least 1,200 points, with each point equivalent to one New Taiwan dollar. The points are valid until December 31, 2024.
However, recent controversies have erupted, with certain vendors violating the regulations by presenting beauty and nail care products as artistic and cultural items, leading some youth to use their Culture Points to purchase these items.
Investigations have been launched, and these vendors have since been disqualified and funds withdrawn.
The Ministry of Culture has reminded recipients that it's forbidden to resell, buy, or cash the Culture Points. Violators will be legally prosecuted depending on the circumstances.
The Culture Points can be used for artistic and cultural experiences and consumption, including museum tickets, community cultural center activities, cultural heritage revitalization initiatives, music exhibitions, art performances, and galleries.
Additionally, recipients can use their points at bookstores and venues selling relevant books but excludes general and business stationery, 3C items, gifts, and household goods.
Usage of the Culture Points excludes online purchases like books, video discs, and subscription services. The only appropriate way of using the points is by scanning the QR Code at relevant venues or presenting the QR Code for scanning.
The points can't be refunded if tickets purchased for performances or activities are returned after the expiration date.
It's also required that stores issue receipts or invoices equivalent to the original value during purchases made with Culture Points. Violating shops may be reported to the National Taxation Bureau.
