TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Delta Electronics' (台達電) foundation became the first Taiwanese company to obtain observer status at the 2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP16) on Monday (Nov. 5) and announced its goal to restore 10,000 coral colonies by 2025.
The Delta Electronics Foundation (台達電基金會) hosted two side events on coral restoration within the negotiation area and showcased its coral restoration achievements in the exhibition zone.
Guo Shan-shan (郭珊珊), the foundation's executive director, stated that the foundation's new observer status at the conference marks a new milestone, building on its role as an official observer of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Guo emphasized Delta's dedication to biodiversity and coral restoration.
Professor Dai Chang-feng (戴昌鳳), chief advisor of Delta's coral restoration project, highlighted Delta's assistance to Taiwanese coral reef scholars. The efforts include breeding heat-resistant coral seedlings in laboratories for field restoration and collecting spawning coral gametes for artificial fertilization and seedling cultivation.
Dai also mentioned the establishment of the "Chaojing Coral Conservation Center" (潮境珊瑚保種中心) in Keelung, which has already collected 20 coral species. The center aims to protect at least 30 species listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and endemic to Taiwan.
