TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Premier Chen Chien-jen dismissed concerns Friday (Jan. 19) over election integrity, saying shortcomings in the electoral system do not compromise the legitimacy of poll results.
Chen's remarks come in response to public skepticism about irregular vote counts at multiple polling stations, questioning the Central Election Commission's (CEC) meticulousness.
Chen said that errors by the CEC have been addressed and rectified. He asserted the impact was nominal and would not affect the election outcome.
The premier also warned against disinformation campaigns intended to affect Taiwan's democratic process. He highlighted a recent rise in instances where unscrupulous individuals, both locally and internationally, have fabricated information to influence Taiwan's democratic operation.
Chen urged the public to maintain vigilance concerning false information these actors propagated so as not to be misguided. He emphasized the need to safeguard Taiwan's hard-earned democratic environment.
