TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Koinu, currently located 280 km east of Cape Eluanbi, is moving at a relatively slow pace of 11 km/hour westward as of 8 a.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 4), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

Forecasters anticipate that Typhoon Koinu will maintain its westward trajectory, potentially making landfall in the Hualien-Taitung area. CWA meteorologist Wu Wan-hua predicts that the typhoon's center will pass through the southern tip of Taitung and the Bashi Channel on Thursday.

Sea conditions and waves near Taiwan have been steadily deteriorating since Tuesday evening, prompting authorities to advise against seaside activities.

The most significant impact of Typhoon Koinu is expected between Wednesday and Friday. As of Wednesday morning, its outer circulation has brought sporadic rainfall to northern and northeastern regions.

Eastern areas will witness an intensification of rainfall, with significant effects expected in southern regions starting Wednesday evening and continuing into Thursday morning.

Showers are expected in various regions on Wednesday, with localized heavy rain anticipated in the mountainous areas of Yilan County and New Taipei City. The Greater Taipei area and the mountainous regions of Taipei and Taoyuan may also experience localized heavy rainfall.

CWA continues to issue wind advisories for several regions, with strong gusty winds anticipated, especially in eastern and southeastern Taiwan. In southeastern areas, including Green Island and Orchid Island, winds may reach Level 12 on the Beaufort scale, warranting caution.

Given the unpredictable path of the typhoon, the public is strongly urged to stay updated on weather information and take necessary precautions to mitigate its potential impact.
