TAOYUAN (TVBS News) — Taiwan's military police recently offered a sneak peek at their newly purchased Indian Challenger motorcycles before their official unveiling at a new base opening in Hsinchu on September 24.
During rehearsals for the upcoming performance, officers revealed that, although the newer vehicles are somewhat easier to control, they still present a challenge for many.
"Our biggest challenge was not being able to find our center of gravity, which led to the motorcycles toppling over," Military Police's Quick Response Company's non-commissioned officer Wang Jo-yun said. "We must sit upright and avoid wobbling," she added.
The new U.S.-made motorcycles, purchased at approximately NT＄60 million, feature fixed and lighter handlebars, replacing the aging Japanese-made Yamaha Royal Stars previously used by the military.
The Indian Challengers boast cruising ranges of up to 300 kilometers and are 37 kilograms lighter. However, there are many questions about their practicality on the battlefield.
Quick Response Company Commander Wu Chien-hsing explained, "We assist the 239 Command in tactical reconnaissance every month."
He added that the motorcycles are used for battlefield reconnaissance, being "the eyes of the army."
"The motorcycles can carry out tactical maneuvers in narrow alleys and lanes, and we need to ensure that the main and secondary routes for armored vehicles are clear."
With the opening of the new military base in Hukou, Hsinchu County, the military police are diligently working to familiarize themselves with the latest vehicles in preparation for the National Day showcase on Oct. 10.
