TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Vice President Lai Ching-te on Wednesday (Aug. 9) conveyed his well-wishes for the upcoming Primary School Football World Cup Invitational, expressing his hope for increased attention and support for the sport in Taiwan.
Speaking at a press conference held in Taipei, Lai extended his best wishes for success to the participating teams in this year's competition, intending to secure the championship trophy on home soil.
He also underscored the significance of football's popularity on a global scale. He emphasized the potential for football to serve as a unifying force in the country and to be able to garner international attention should Taiwan excel in the sport.
Highlighting the recent surge in various sports within Taiwan, Lai mentioned baseball, basketball, badminton, and tennis. He emphasized that part of the purpose of the press conference was to rally public support for football's development in Taiwan.
The Primary School Football World Cup Invitational will unfold on Aug. 16-18 at the University of Taipei. The event will witness the participation of primary school teams from Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
