TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso likened Japan-Taiwan relations to the main character in the popular manga "One Piece," Monkey D. Luffy, during a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen on Tuesday (Aug.8).
Aso stated that Luffy has never betrayed his friends and expressed his hope for a similar warmth and trust between Taiwan and Japan. The former premier led a delegation on a three-day visit to Taiwan, demonstrating his commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.
The premier kick-started the day by participating in the "Ketagalan Forum: 2023 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue" opening at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Later, he attended a luncheon with Vice President Lai Ching-te at the Presidential Office, followed by an afternoon meeting with President Tsai.
The former Japanese Prime Minister voiced his support for Vice President Lai and the Democratic Progressive Party's resolve to protect Taiwan. He also shared his eager contribution to the Japan-Taiwan relationship, adding that he was happy and honored to be able to do so.
