TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Repair work is underway in Nanjing West Road, with traffic expected to resume by Thursday evening, according to the last reports. The massive sinkhole that emerged on Nanjing West Road on Monday (July 10) has startled nearby residents and caused significant disruption.

On Tuesday evening, authorities completely sealed the broken sewer pipe with cement. Once the curing process is complete, new gas, water, and sewer pipes will be installed.

The Taipei Public Works Department has emphasized the importance of thoroughly inspecting the pipelines in the vicinity using Ground-Penetrating Radar.

Chang Yu-hui, deputy commissioner of the Taipei Public Works Department, explained that regular comprehensive checks of the sewer system are conducted, but this is the first time the pipeline in this area was damaged by tidal influence.

Usually, the underground water level should remain stable. However, due to the proximity of Nanjing West Road to the Tamsui River, it fluctuates with the tides, making sewer pipe maintenance more challenging.

As a result, future inspections will pay closer attention to potential damage caused by tidal effects. Authorities emphasize that all old pipes in the vicinity will be inspected in the future.
