TAIPEI(TVBS News) — Taiwan's Minister without Portfolio John Deng, and other top officials are in the United States to attend the SelectUSA Investment Summit in Maryland from May 1 to 4. During a visit to Washington DC, Deng met with U.S. government officials to discuss bilateral trade agreements and investment opportunities in Taiwan.
According to Deng, "Taiwan considers cross-strait stability an important thing. Hence, it is incorrect to say that investing in Taiwan contains political risks. We hope the US government interacts more with Taiwan and takes active moves to eliminate such mistakes."
Deng also met with the U.S. deputy trade representative Sarah Bianchi during his visit. He announced that the initial stage of the U.S-Taiwan 21st Century Trade Initiative is nearly complete, but no specific signing date has been set.
Deng expressed his desire for a comprehensive free trade agreement, including tariffs, but acknowledged that the two countries have different ideas on which of the seven areas in the Initiative should be discussed next. He emphasized the shared goal of completing the endorsement of the Initiative this year, saying, "practically speaking, we should move forward as far as we can and finish what we can as soon as possible."
