TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The high number of aging buildings is causing concern for Taiwan's residents, particularly in densely populated cities prone to frequent earthquakes.
With a population of nearly 3 million, Taipei City has the highest number of old buildings, with over 71% of housing units being over 30 years old.
Although these buildings may be cheaper and well-located, they require constant maintenance and inspections to ensure stability.
According to realtors, the prevalence of aging buildings in special municipalities like Taipei can be traced back to early development in these areas.
With business booming, residential buildings were rapidly built to house local citizens.
However, over time, repairs and urban renewal plans become more challenging.
"Many homeowners with high-value properties may not feel an urgent need to undergo urban renewal," real estate agent Chang Hsu-lan explained.
"Additionally, some may be using their apartments as offices," she added.
"However, if storefronts undergo urban renewal, it could decrease the rental income they generate."
From 2018 to 2020, over 3,000 old residential buildings in Taipei were tested for earthquake resistance, but only some have undergone renovation.
Despite some opposition to calls for urban renewal, homeowners in Taipei must consider their buildings' integrity to ensure a safer housing environment.
