TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's old streets are a popular attraction among tourists from far and near, but after two years of the pandemic, many business owners are trying to find back the spark to attract visitors once more.

One of the oldest "old streets" in Taiwan is located in Taipei's Wanhua District. Chief operating officer of Wanhua's local creative team Shih Ching-yao revealed, "we developed along the lines of this 'old district' concept, so whether it’s old buildings, old cultures, old employees, or old industries, we welcome them and promote them."

According to Shih, the business owners at this Wanhua old street have gradually introduced new ideas and adopted new methods to promote and maintain their stalls, while keeping up with the times.

In the past, many traditional markets in Taiwan were set up in old buildings which have since become historic sites.

This, in turn, has helped these markets become one-of-a-kind travel destinations that incorporate both the product and history of the past, with the fresh elements of today.

In Taipei City, many traditional markets have recognized the need to become more competitive, bringing in new blood and young business owners to set up shop.

Those working in Taiwan’s old streets hope that through customers’ experience, it can bring about more local tourism and business, thus attracting new people to the area.

In recent years, Taiwan has seen many young people return to their hometowns to open their own businesses, such as coffee shops or restaurants. Some also become local tour guides to introduce the history and art of their towns, relaying the stories of the past to visitors today.
