TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Foreigners in Taiwan will have to cover the costs of their COVID treatment on their own starting in 2023.

From April to October, the Taiwanese government reportedly spent NT$314 million to treat foreigners without health insurance infected with COVID.

Taiwan's third wave of the COVID pandemic has already started; the Chinese New Year holiday could increase the risk of infections as families are expected to travel domestically or internationally.

Japan is one of the most popular destinations, and Taiwan health authorities are worried about the COVID situation.

Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC), however, said authorities will not be more strict on the arrivals, since Japan provides all information regarding the pandemic.

Against this backdrop, the CDC has also urged people to be fully vaccinated and more mindful of the risk of infection.
