TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has garnered some support in its plans to extend the current, 4-month military service to one year.
Though the announcement has yet to come forth, former Minister of National Defense Feng Shih-kuan has voiced his support with the plans, adding that 4 months is really too short for training conscripts.
In addition, local parties in support of Taiwan's independence have expressed their support for the proposal too.
The head of Taiwan Association of University Professors, Hsu Wen-tang, pointed out that policies need to change in accordance with international situations.
Amid soaring cross-stait tensions and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Taiwan's combat readiness has been placed under higher scrutiny as the nation reflects on its preparedness in case a war breaks out.
