TAINAN (TVBS News) — A sushi chain store in Taiwan has offered a free meal to those with two special Chinese characters in their names, and a Taiwanese man, Su Kun-kun (蘇 | |), was the lucky winner.
The sushi chain store is promoting sales for the Double 11 day (also called Singles' Day) by letting people have free or discounted meals if their names have the character "Kun-kun" (| |) which looks like two ones.
Double 11 day originates from China. It is an unofficial holiday to celebrate those who are not in relationships. The event was later turned into a shopping event.
Su explained how his father named him based on his birthday. "I was born in November, so I got this name," Su said. "I have a sister who was born on June 6, so her name is 'Liu-liu' (六六).”
Su added that he feels lucky he didn't have to change his name to win the special promotion like during last year's "Salmon chaos."
"I am happy as if this promotion is just for me," he continued.
In 2021, another sushi chain store had a similar promotional campaign aimed at diners with the Chinese character "salmon" in their name. When the promotion ended, more than 300 people had reportedly changed their names to a type of ray-finned fish from the family Salmonidae.
