AMD, Qualcomm set the stage for AI PC showdown at COMPUTEX

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Even as MWC Mobile Congress Barcelona 2024 is in full swing, momentum for COMPUTEX 2024 is already beginning to build with announcements that AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su and Qualcomm CEO Christian Amon are set to deliver keynotes on June 3.

As the largest computer industry tradeshow in the world, COMPUTEX will be of great significance to both companies as they intensify their efforts to establish a strong position in the emerging AI PC category that is expected to drive market growth after two years of double-digit decreases.

An AI PC is defined as a notebook or desktop system that can run generative AI applications such as Microsoft CoPilot locally on the system rather than from the cloud using a dedicated neural processing unit integrated in the main processor. Key benefits of AI PCs include higher performance for document, graphics, and video creation, improved privacy and security, and longer battery life for notebooks.

With its highly competitive products and close ties to Taiwan motherboard and PC manufacturers such as Asus and Acer, AMD is already building a strong position in the AI PC segment for its AMD RyzenTM desktop and notebook processors. COMPUTEX 2024 provides the ideal opportunity for the company to demonstrate its strong momentum by showcasing the full range of AI notebooks, systems, and motherboards that feature the AMD RyzenTM platform available from Taiwan manufacturers.

As a relative newcomer to the PC processor market, driving widespread adoption of its new Snapdragon X Elite platform across the Taiwan computer manufacturing base will be more challenging for Qualcomm. Initial benchmarks look very promising for the Snapdragon X Elite, but there is every chance we will see some interesting notebook design wins at COMPUTEX as Qualcomm establishes its presence in the AI PC segment.

Even though Intel has yet to announce its plans for COMPUTEX 2024, there is no doubt that the company will be aggressively promoting the Core Intel

Ultra processor for the AI PC at the event. With Nvidia touting the advanced generative AI performance of its RTX graphics processors as well, the stage is set for the most exciting COMPUTEX in many years. It will be fun to watch how the AI PC showdown plays out!
