TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) on Tuesday (Dec. 5) signed a cooperation agreement with the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) to collaborate on fields including semiconductors, net zero emissions, biotech and medicine, and startups.

The focus on innovative research and inter-field collaboration is aimed at leveraging complementary strengths between the two entities to achieve mutual benefits.

During a speech at the Taiwan-Japan symposium, ITRI President Edwin Liu remarked on the cultural and professional parallels between Taiwan and Japan, emphasizing that a joint effort would result in a win-win situation.

Tokyo Tech President Kazuya Masu also expressed a particular interest in biotech and medicine as well as startups, looking forward to further international cooperation boosted by Tokyo Tech's talent and facilities.

At the symposium, ITRI shared advances in clean energy generation and pure hydrogen production technologies. Tokyo Tech, on the other hand, offered insights into their vision for a green transition.

The timing of this partnership is strategic as Tokyo Tech prepares to merge with Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) in fiscal 2024, forming the new "Institute of Science Tokyo". This forthcoming merger was highlighted as an opportunity for the agreement to expand into the biomedical field.

Both parties plan to deepen their collaboration through technical symposiums and the sharing of research outcomes. This strategic movement lays a stronger foundation for future Taiwan-Japanese innovative technologies, potentially setting a new benchmark for international research partnerships.
