NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The investigation into allegations of cannabis use by Taiwanese influencers Joeman, Lyra and Tang Yu continued on Wednesday (Nov. 7). This news has sparked a debate surrounding cannabis legalization in Taiwan, which has become the center of attention.

The day before, the three KOLs publicly apologized for possessing and consuming cannabis. After receiving a tip-off, the New Taipei City Police Department's Criminal Investigation Corps conducted drug raids in several locations on Monday. Ten individuals were apprehended and taken to the District Prosecutor's Office for interrogation. Following the investigation, they were released without bail as the investigation continues.

The incident has sparked controversy online, with concerns being raised about the moral conduct of influencers. It has also sparked debate over cannabis consumption. The showbiz industry in Taiwan has witnessed similar drug-related scandals in the past, involving actor Kai Ko, singer Hsie Ho-hsian and rapper Hu Jui-kai, which have negatively impacted their reputations.

Cannabis is categorized as a narcotic in Taiwan and is not decriminalized. Despite the ongoing discourse on cannabis decriminalization, highlighted by the public march and the marijuana-themed market organized by the Green Wave organization in April in front of the Presidential Office Building in Taipei, the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) has reiterated its rigid anti-cannabis legalization stance.

It vows to maintain stringent enforcement against all activities involving marijuana. As these incidents with Taiwanese influencers come to light, the conversation on the legalization and use of cannabis is reignited.
