National Chengchi University opens mixed-gender student dormitory (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The National Chengchi University (NCCU) transformed its former staff dormitory, "Hua-nan New Village," into a student dormitory earlier this month, marking a pioneering move toward co-ed university housing in Taiwan.
Under this new arrangement, male and female students can freely form teams to apply for dormitory placement, and mixed-gender room sharing on the same floor is permitted.
Beginning this semester, students have started to occupy the dormitory units, with many opting to share rooms with students of the same gender. The dormitory is fully equipped with essential amenities, including beds, desks, chairs, refrigerators, and washing machines, for the convenience of the students.
The monthly rent for each student averages around NT$2,500 (approximately US$90). Thirty-nine student teams applied for accommodation in the dormitory, and 22 groups were successfully established.
NCCU's decision to introduce mixed-gender dormitories represents a significant departure from the traditional approach, making dormitory applications open to student groups without gender restrictions for the first time.
