TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A South African woman unintentionally entered the northbound section of Taiwan's National Highway No. 1 while riding a YouBike to reach Linkou District in New Taipei City.
Upon receiving the report on Tuesday (June 27), shortly after 7 p.m., the police dispatched officers to intercept the woman and inform her that YouBikes are not allowed on highways. Under Article 33, Clause 4 of the Road Traffic Management Penalty Regulations, she was issued an on-the-spot fine, amounting to a fine between NT$3,000 and NT$6,000.
According to sources, the foreigner, believed to be in Taiwan for work purposes, appeared unfamiliar with local traffic regulations. She rented a YouBike and relied on her smartphone for navigation, which failed to divert her from the highway route.
As the incident occurred during rush hour, traffic was heavy on the northbound Linkou stretch, leading motorists to notice her predicament. One concerned driver promptly alerted the authorities.
This incident serves as a reminder for visitors to familiarize themselves with local traffic rules and regulations to ensure their safety and compliance while traveling in Taiwan.
