TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Costco issued on Thursday (May 11) a response to the request from the Kaohsiung government regarding a compensation plan for the Hepatitis A-contaminated berries.

The plan includes a full refund, subsidies for testing fees, and payment for relevant medical expenses for affected customers.

Members of Costco who have consumed the tainted berries and are experiencing Hepatitis A symptoms can receive a subsidy of NT$500 for the Hepatitis A IgM antibody test after consulting with CDC-approved clinics.

Additionally, Costco will cover relevant medical expenses for symptomatic members caused by the affected product.

The Administration and International Affairs Department of Kaohsiung City had requested Costco Taiwan provide an explanation on May 2 regarding the tainted Kirkland Signature brand berries and submit a compensation plan by May 11.

The Consumer Service Center of the city government has received nine complaints to date. Authorities said that if consumers feel their rights need to be properly addressed, they can file a consumer dispute complaint.

The city government has stated that it will maintain close contact with the Consumer Protection Committee of the Executive Yuan and cooperate with trustworthy consumer protection organizations.

If necessary, they will assist in filing a group litigation claim. The Ministry of Health and Welfare has also indicated that it is possible to apply for financial support from the Food Safety Protection Fund.
