Taiwan businesses ponder feasibility of 4-day workweek

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — After a successful trial of a four-day workweek in Britain last year, which saw participation from 61 companies with positive results, businesses in Taiwan are also considering implementing this practice for their employees. 

However, as a nation heavily relying on import and export business, this may pose some difficulties.

"There are lots of import and export businesses in Taiwan," labor market expert Chen Jui-chu said,

"Financial and accounting operations may be hindered if workers have a four-day workweek and do not work on Fridays."

Despite the challenges, the four-day workweek trials in Britain revealed that reducing work hours to 32 hours per week increased profits by 35%, while turnover rates significantly decreased by 57%. 

Additionally, 40% of employees reported better sleeping conditions, and 71% experienced a decrease in burnout.

Labor market experts suggest that Taiwan could follow suit with a shorter workweek, but different job positions and departments may have differing opinions on the possibility of working longer 10-hour days. 

Engineers and those in research and development departments may find it challenging to concentrate for extended periods, and some may experience increased pressure to complete their workload within the 10-hour timeframe.

While four-day workweeks could improve work-life balance, it is essential for businesses to communicate clearly with their partners to ensure a positive outcome.

As the discussion continues, it remains to be seen if Taiwan will adopt a four-day workweek for its businesses and employees.
